I was just reading an article where the FDA will be stopping the use of avastin in breast cancer patients because of dangerous side effects. Will this decision e entually impact the children who are receiving this treatment for their coats disease. When we found out our daughter had coats I did a lot of research and asked her doctor about this option, he said he would not do it because the risks out weighed the benefits. Will the FDA's decision make you rethink the use of avastin for your child? Also if your child is receiving avastin injections has he or she ever had any serious side effects?

We used Avastin 3 times on my 3 year old son. There were no side effects other than redness around the injection site. We live in Canada, so an FDA ruling likely will not affect us. The avastin did slow the progression. We can't use anymore laser because it is in his central vision and that would create scars that he couldn't see through. We are on to a new drug called ozurdex that is showing some great results. As far as the FDA ruling weighing on my mind about whether to use it or not, it is important to remember the cost of doing nothing and what will happen if you don't. The eye is essentially a lost cause if you do nothing, so we will try whatever our doc recommends.
