Hello everyone. My son Matthew (age 16 nearly 17)was diagnosed with Coats disease last October. It was discovered during a routine eye check by a very switched on Asda optician. Matthew has had a problem with his vision since he was 10 but nothing was every spotted and he was given glasses! As we live in Wales he is being treated at our excellent local eye hospital. After an angiogram he underwent laser surgery last November which unfortunatley didn't work completely as the protein is still leaking. We go back to the hospital today for a decision on whether he needs more laser surgery. He is at the moment applying for his driving licence as his vision is still 6.6 we hope he will be able to drive without any problems. There is a distinct lack of information in the UK about the disease. Matthew is also has OCD and hsi therapist thinks there may be a link. Anyone else heard of this?

LEE IS DUE TO START HIS DRIVING LESSONS IN OCTOBER WHEN WE CONTACTED THE DVLA WE WERE TOLD WE DID NOT NEED TO DECLARE HIS CONDITION AS LONG AS HE COULD READ THE NUMBER PLATE AT THE RELEVANT DISTANCE. IF YOU DON'T MIND ME ASKING WHAT TYPE OF OCD ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT, LEE HAS NEVER BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH THIS, BUT HE DOES CONTINUALLY WASH HIS HANDS WHICH HAS ME NOW WANDERING IF THIS IS IN ANYWAY CONNECTED.

At first we thought Matt had some form of Tourrettes Syndrome (still not convinced it is that). He went through a stage of continual handwashing. He opens and closes doors continually and switches lights on and off. In therapy he disclosed lots of rituals all of them he does to keep his family safe from harm!! I have four children and he has always been the most challenging! Lots of sleep and behavious problems when he was younger, although he is still the most loving and thoughtful child you would ever wish to meet. We attended the eye clinic yesterday and the news was very good the laser surgery appears to have worked on most of the blood vessels, there is still some leakage but this is being contained by the scar tissue from the laser treatment. Good news is they do not want him back until November. He is now looking forward to sarting college in September.

Hiya, our 3 years old son appears to have the 'washing of hands' all the time/very often syndrome too, he hates having doors open around the house and if I tidy up for example plate from the table he shouts at me to put it back where it was- back on the table! Is that very bad?Now I am putting two and two together again!
