Dylan had his first laser treatment on September 18. Dr. Clark said that he did more laser than he anticipated and we're to return on October 8 for follow-up. What surprised me is that the anesthesiologist told us that there was a link between Coats' and muscular dystrophy? He told us this because Dylan was put under anethesia for the laser treatment. The anesthesiologist said he wanted to inform us of this because of the medication used for putting Dylan under. Has anyone else been told of this connection? Ellen

Ellen, There is one form on Muscular Dystrophy that can cause changes in the blood vessels in the eye:Background: Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is caused by deletions within a tandem array of D4Z4 repeats on chromosome 4q35. In addition to muscle degeneration, most patients with FSHD develop abnormalities of the retinal vasculature. Previous work has suggested that muscle degeneration in FSHD results from increased expression of genes proximal to the deletion, including FRG1 Coats' Disease is believed to be a mutation of the NDP gene, and FEVR is a mutation of the FZD4 gene. Some other concurrent symptoms of FSHD: Symptoms - Weakness and wasting of the muscles around the eyes and mouth, and of the shoulders, upper arms and lower legs initially, with later weakness of abdominal muscles and sometimes hip muscles. There is no mention about blood vessels breaking open in any article I read about FSHD. I think it is a real stretch to say that the 2 are even mildly related, and, in my un-Medical opinion, your anesthesiologist should not have alarmed you in this way. Dave
