My name is Julie. I just took my 6 year old son to a retina specialist today because his regular eye doctor saw some thinning in the back of his right eye. Boy was I surprised when the doctor told me he had Coats. I am new to this so any info anyone can give me, or even some peace of mind it would be great. They are scheduling us now for an appointment with a specialist at Duke. So when we go for that we will learn more. They did tell me that we caught the Coats very early which is a good sign. The bad part to me with my son is that he has really bad vision on top of this. But he does well with his glasses and they do not hinder him at all. Again if anyone could just give me a little bit of feedback I would appreciate it and thank you to those who made this site. I will say a little prayer for everyone on here. Thank you!

Hi Julie,
I'm so sorry to hear your news, I know it can be overwheming! This site is a great source of information. My son Josh (8 years old) was dignosed in Jan. he is also being treated at Duke. We have been extreamly happy with Duke and Dr. Toth so far. Josh is in stage 4 which means his retina is completly detached and he as lost all sight in his coats eye. Luckly his non coats is is 20/50 which glasses correct nicely. Josh had his fist surgery last month and we go back next week (March 12 & 13th) for his second surgery. Josh has do so well with the surgerys and test and treaments; he is such a trooper! I'm so glad to hear that you caught this so soon. I hope hear good news at Duke. Let me know if I can answer any questions. I don't know much about coats, but I'm a mom too!

Thank you for sending me a note back. We actually go tomorrow and we will be seeing Dr Toth also. Another very funny thing I had to add is that my son is also Joshua. I am very nervous and anxious at the same time. Ready to hear what they can do or what we need to do. If you don't mind me asking where are you from?

Hi Julie,
We live in Virginia Beach, Duke is about 3 1/2 hours away. How did your appointment go? What did Dr. Toth say? Did you like her and her fellows? Josh had a hard time with his 2nd surgery. He had a lot of pain and redness, but we added extra eye drops and he did just fine.

The appt went well. We are actually scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning. We have to be there at 6am. I really liked Dr Toth and everyone else was wonderful. I am sorry to hear your Josh had a hard time. I cannot stand seeing my children in pain so that will be really hard. Thanks for keeping up with us and I hope everything goes really well. Oh yeah and I am originally from Elizabeth City, so that is pretty close to you guys. Take care and keep me updated on how Josh is doing.

We went back today to Duke to see Dr Toth and we are going for another surgery next Friday. It has not progressed but the leaking has not stopped. She is going to try freezing this time along with the laser. So hopefully this will help.

I haven't been up here in awhile. Joshua seems to be doing really good. He had his second surgery about 3 weeks ago. He had cryo done this time. It was a little more painful and his eye looked pretty rough, but all in all he did great. Only had to give him pain medicine twice and he was good to go. Kids do so wonderful with these things, they amaze me. We go back on June 4th for a check, but Dr Toth seems to think there will not be another surgery for at least another month or so. Keep your fingers crossed.....everyone is in our thoughts and prayers! Take care!

I was just reading your posts and thought I'd let it was interesting that my son is named Joshua also. He's 2 and is having his 3rd surgery in a couple of weeks. We, however, do not go to Duke. We go to Cole Eye Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. We are so blessed to have such wonderful doctors!
