My son was diagnosed with Coats' in his right eye when he was 6 years old. He is now 15 and is starting to learn how to drive. The only restriction he has is the need for side mirrors. Has anyone had any problems with their child being able to drive, etc.?

I was diagnosed when I was 12 and I am now 28. I haven't had any problems with driving. However, I do like to have my eye doc fill out my eye exam form since I get a little freaked taking the eye exam at the DMV.

Donna- I agree with Coats' Girl, have the doc fill out the paperwork so the DMV doesn't jeopordize his ability to drive.

Also, I have been living with CD since age 5. I would recommend driving with him to get a feel for his depth perception on the right side. When I learned to drive, I would frequently hit things with my right mirror. As a guide, I found that the grease strip on roads should always be lined up with the steering wheel... believe it or not my restriction is the same - outside mirrors.

I was diagnosed with Coats when i was 22,i started driving when i was 17 and i guess i grew up not noticing that i had a problem,I do drive with caution when i require the use of my right eye,i am just a more careful driver.
I am now 44 and and have been told by many that i am a good driver especially with sight only in one eye.
Funny though, i do not have any problems with depth perception.

My son was diagnosed at 5 and is now 17. He got his license last year and has done great. We did have to have forms filled out from the doctor for the DMV and they did give him a more extensive behind the wheel test. They called it a "vision driving test" and said if it was documented at the DMV he wouldn't have to have forms filled out each time and wouldn't have the test re-done. We let him drive A LOT when he had his permit so he would be extremely comfortable driving. He is actually a better driver thatn a lot of people on the road! He has zero vision in his right eye.
