Hello I havenot heard yet about the coats in both eyes. Normally it happens in one eye. Just the thought of coats in both eyes is so scary. May God save the healthy eye of all the children who is surving with coats in one eye.

I am sorry if I missed your earlier messages. Could you please share how old is he? My son is three years old and he has coats in his right eye. His doctor says it normally happens in only one eye. I am surprised to see your message. What is the reason that his good eye can go at anytime?

presca, I believe I read somewhere that between 8 and 10% of Coats' cases are bilateral. There are several case histories online, and Jerry is not the first we have heard from here. If Coats' disease is present in both eyes, one is significantly worse than the other. The second eye may be affected years later, which is why both eyes need to be checked on a regular basis. We go every 6 months to have both eyes examined.

Just wanted to clarify something. We have no reason to believe that Jacob's Coats' Disease is bilateral. We have him checked every 6 months by his retinal surgeon, and the alternating 6 months for his non-Coats' eye. He is colorblind in his non-Coats' eye, and also has a prescription for an astigmatism.

presca, It is a condition caused by an irregularly shaped cornea or lens. I have seen estimates that say that up to 28% of children may have this condition.

I was diagnosed with Coats in both eyes at age 7. The disease had progressed rapidly in my right eye and laser surgery was able to stop any further progression, but I have limited vision in that eye. I am now 17 and there has been no change in the status of my left eye. I go every six months for checkups for both eyes.

I was diagnosed with Coats in both eyes when I was 4 years old after accidentally hitting my right eye. The disease had attacked my right eye first and it was completely destroyed. The doctors were able to save my left eye with laser surgery. I'm now 39 years old and my vision is now 20/10. I'm very very lucky. If I hadn't hit my eye when I was 4, I would be completely blind.

My son has bilateral Coats. Left eye was diagnosed in 2000, followed by cryo & laser surgeries. Activity in right eye began in 2007. Luckily we'd been going to 6 month check-ups and my son was old enough to verbalize changes he was seeing (new blind spot, flashes). Doctor performed cryo, laser and Avastin shots. Although he still has scarring in central vision, he functions at a very high level - plays sports, guitar, hiking.
