Hello Dave-

Have you looked into cataract surgery? What may be the complications involved?

I am just wondering, because our son has developed cataract in his coats eye.

Thanks

jassi,
We will be talking to Jake's surgeon in early July. His Coats' eye is completely covered with the cataract. His specialist has been against doing the surgery, because the only benefits would be cosmetic. It would be good to see what his retina and optic nerve look like, so we are leaning towards having the procedure done. Jacob is 100% against any surgery, though, and any talk of it brings tears to his eyes. His appointment is July 3rd, so we will let you know what happens.

Take care,
Dave

Thanks Dave

Our son's appointment is also early in July, It is on July 7th. His eye is not fully covered, but quite a bit.

Let us know what you decide. We are planning on talking to Dr. Stout about it too. Lets see. Hopefully all will be good with Jacob's Retina and optic Nerve.

Thank you so much for replying!

Jassi- our son Grant had cataracts surgery on May 14, after his coats eye quickly developed the cataract. The surgery went quite well - he could see the next day and even better only 5 days later. He has another follow up appointment on June 15. If your had sight in his coats eye before the surgery, I would strongly consider doing the surgery. Take care and good luck. Heidi

Heidi-

Thank you so much for posting, How old is your son? We are really glad that surgery went well, the eye looked better in 5 days. Please post after your next appointment. Our appointment is not not until first week of July, at that point we would like to discuss this with Dr. Stout.

Thanks Again!
Jassi

Jassi - Thank you too for posting. Today, Grant (who is 4) had his 1 month follow up after cataract removal. The good thing is he is seeing better than he did after his last follow up appointment approx. two and 1/2 weeks ago. The not so good thing is that the back part of the lens sac is now beginning to cloud over as well. This is not unexpected nor uncommon. We and our dr. were hoping to avoid this for several reasons - Grant is young and eye is still developing, and the risk for glaucoma increases when the entire sac is gone. But the lens put in at the time of the cataract removal is in a good position and his eye is healing well. Grant is so cooperative, that the dr. believes she can laser the back part of the lens sac right in her office - no anthesia, thank goodness. We go back on July 13 for another follow up and to discuss more the laser.

Good luck in July and keep in touch.

Heidi

update-

We saw our Dr. this week, he said he doesn't reccomend any surgery for cataract because it will not help improve the vision in coat eye. He said he the aesthectic problem occurs then he will suggest a lens.

Please post after Grant's apppointment on the 13th.

Best wishes!

Jassi

Jassi - so sorry to hear that the cataract removal won't help your son's vision. I hope his retina is intact and otherwise doing o.k.

Grant had his 2 month check up post cataract removal. The lens sac membrane continues to thicken and become more opaque. So, the plan is to have the laser surgery mid to late August. His lens implant is positioned well and his vision continues to improve. We are very fortunate. . . .And, aren't our kids amazing??? I am in awe at every appointment as to how strong and brave Grant is - he is much more mature than his age of 4.

Take care, and keep us updated. Heidi
