We orded glasses for my son origionally when we thought he had a vision problem, but I am wondering if he should be wearing them daily since he doesn't have a true vision problem but Coats Disease in the affected eye. I understand that he should wear goggles when playing sports to protect both eyes. Does he need to wear prescription everyday glasses or just goggles when playing sports? Just wondering if the other children affected by this disease have been counseled to wear prescription glasses also. I am a bit confused by this. I have asked my son numerous times if the prescription glasses have improved his visual ability in the affected eye and his answer has been no. If they are not helping with the day to day stuff then why bother. We did get his prescription goggles today. We ordered through Walmart and it took about a week.
Shayes, The need to protect your son's non-Coats' eye is critical. You still want him to be a normal child, but you cannot risk an accidental injury to his non-Coats' eye. You can ask your ophthalmologist, but I believe that he should be wearing polycarbonate lenses, even if there is no prescription. Our son wears them at all times other than when he is sleeping.
Our son also wears polycarbonate lenses (no prescription) at all times, and rec specs for gym class. He has 4 brothers and there is plenty of horsing around, which I want to allow, but be sure his eyes are protected. I hope your surgery went well today. Keep us posted. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
